Padres hire Hoyer as general manager

Jed Hoyer was once co-general manager of the Boston Red Sox for 44 days after Theo Epstein walked away from the job.

Now Hoyer has a GM gig of his own.

The San Diego Padres have hired Hoyer as their new general manager, a person with knowledge of the situation said Saturday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement won't be until Monday.

Hoyer, who was in Boston's front office when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 and 2007, is due in San Diego on Sunday.

Martinez wouldn't mind facing Yankees again

Pedro Martinez stood on the mound in The House That Ruth Built many times during big games, listening to the taunts, jeers and insults from Yankees fans.

If New York advances to the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, Martinez would love to get the ball again at Yankee Stadium, the new $1.5 billion version. He won't be intimidated by the crowd, that's for sure.

Mets minor leaguer dies of apparent heart attack

New York Mets minor league pitcher Rafael Castro has died of an apparent heart attack. He was 18.

Castro died Friday at the Mets' academy in Carabobo, Venezuela. The Mets announced his death Saturday.

Castro had spent two years with the Mets' team in the Venezuelan Summer League. The right-handed pitcher was from Colombia.

Jaramillo joins Cubs as hitting coach

The Chicago Cubs hired Rudy Jaramillo as their hitting coach on Wednesday, hoping he can resurrect an offense that struggled during a disappointing 2009 season.

Jaramillo, who spent 15 years as the hitting coach of the Texas Rangers, replaced Von Joshua. Joshua was removed after the season and offered a job in Triple-A, where he'd worked previously.

The Cubs finished the season batting .255.

Jaramillo turned down a one-year deal from the Rangers last week, ending a long run during which the Rangers were among the most feared lineups in baseball.

Rangers officials meet with potential owners

A second potential new owner for the Texas Rangers has met with team officials.

Pittsburgh attorney Chuck Greenberg and his advisers met with club officials from baseball and business operations Wednesday and toured Rangers Ballpark.

Houston businessman Jim Crane and his advisers did the same thing Tuesday.

Financially strapped owner Tom Hicks said this summer that he was willing to sell controlling interest in the Rangers.

Hicks Sports Group said the meetings were "routine and part of the normal due diligence process."
